So You Want to Buy a Corgi

Corgis are one of the most well known dog breeds, mostly known for their stumpy legs and big ears. First, we'll discuss the qualities they have that one should consider before getting a Corgi. Lifestyle, activity level and work schedule all come into play when deciding on a particular dog. Next, you will need to decide where you get your dog, and how to find a reputable source. You're well on your way to becoming a great puppy parent simply by doing research on your particular breed of choice.

Are Corgis Right for You?

If their cuteness is the only reason you want a Corgi, you better do a little more research before taking the plunge. Consider your lifestyle first and foremost. If you're gone eight or more hours a day, who's going to walk it and let it out? This is true for any dog, but Corgis especially since they are an athletic breed. Do you mind being covered in hair 24/7? Okay, it's not that bad, but they do shed quite a bit. Barking can be another issue, as with any dog. Notice I said can, since the amount of barking your dog does has a lot to do with training and the individual dog. Herding and nipping at heals is also a common downside, but more so when it comes to children. I personally haven't had problems with either, but again it will be different for each dog.

Adopt or Shop?

First, you must decide if you want to adopt your dog, or get one from a breeder. Going the adoption route has it's benefits - I mean, you're saving a dog and all. But keep in mind, you might not get exactly what you want. If you are particular about the Corgi you want, and are expecting a red and white fluffy, shopping might be your best bet.

Finding a Reputable Breeder

Let's say you've decided to go the shopping route. Hey, I did too - let the hater's hate. Finding a good breeder can be as simple as a quick internet search. But don't stop there! If you're lucky enough, go and visit the breeder to see how they take care of their dogs and what kind of living situation they have. If that's not an option for you, call them up and ask them a ton of questions. If they are passionate about the dogs, they will be happy to answer all your questions and then some. If they give you attitude, ask for money right away and talk about the process as if it's only a transaction, run in the opposite direction! The AKC breeder referral is a great place to start.

Corgis are considered to be the 'social butterflies' of dogs, and love to be around dogs and people alike. Their bold personalities and huge smiles bring joy to owners everywhere. Enjoy your new Corgi!
