Tips For Removing Ticks From Dogs

Spot the ticks
Ticks have an oval body shape with tiny head and the young ticks might have six legs. Adult and Nymph ticks might have eight legs. They normally attach themselves to human or mainly dogs using their strong mouth parts. When the tick has already consumed blood, its body normally gets inflamed and appears to be swollen or like leathery gray ball.

Tick prevention
There are several contemporary products available from the veterinarian that can kill and prevent infestation. You can even find some of them in aerosol sprays. The other products are applied by squeezing a small amount of liquid on your pet’s skin usually at the back of their neck. These products cause the attached ticks to die and fall off instantly. This is one of the best ways to remove ticks and even prevent them from appearing in the future. However it is necessary you follow instructions from the veterinarian. There are some pet shampoos that kill ticks. You just have to shampoo your pet dog according to the directions. Make sure you don’t get the shampoo in he dog’s ears or eyes.

Removing ticks
In case you find some attached ticks on your pet dog, you can manually remove it with the help of fine point tweezers. Just position the tweezer as close as possible to the tick’s mouth or wherever you spot them. Then squeeze the tweezer around and firmly pull it off. Make sure you do not squeeze too hard that might dislodge the body and leave the head embedded. When you have the parasite just drop it in rubbing alcohol to kill it. Make sure to wash your hands as well.

It is also necessary to wash your pet’s wounds using pet friendly disinfectant and also apply triple antibiotic cream to the wound to prevent further infection. Your pet dog might have itchy red bump after you have removed the tick. In this case you can apply hydro cortisone spray to heal the wound.
