You yell stop to your dog, but he does not pay attention to you! Now though he has done it again and darted out the door on you. You have to run after him and hope that he will stop before your lungs explode! Once you have managed to chase your dog down and start catching your breath you are wondering how you can manage to stop your dog from darting out the door. You can do this very easily by following this advice.

The number one thing that you can do is go out the door first. This may seem like it will be hard to do because your dog likes to dart, but you need to break this habit of darting out the door. To accomplish breaking your dog darting out the door you will need to close the door behind you and make him wait. You may say but he will stick his head in the door then you need to gently close the door so you will not hurt your dog.

The next thing that you can try doing if you are afraid you will close your dogs head in the door because he darts so much is to place a gate up so he cannot get to the doorway. This will work out really well unless you are trying to take him out, but you have to get him used to the idea of you going out the door first! So if he has a gate in front of him then he will not be able to get out past it unless he jumps really well!

Then the next thing that you can do to stop your dog from darting out the door would be to put a leash on him. This way when he starts running towards the door if you're not the one going out the door you can easily pull gently on the leash to keep him from darting. This method will work because the leash will allow you to maintain control over him and where he is heading. This will work out great if you have a friend or relative that can go in and out of the door frequently so that your dog will get the point that darting out the door is unacceptable.

So if your dog is constantly darting out the door you can correct this behavior! Just follow the three tips that are listed above and you can break this habit without having to use any type of punishment! When your dog does finally learn to stop darting out your door you can reward him with treats so he keeps this good behavior up!
