You want your pet to live a long and healthy life span. You will find that there are natural treatments for some common pet problems and one of those problems could be dog having seizures.

What happens

Canine seizures can cause the animal to fall over, start pawing at the air, whine, and it can also cause the pet to urinate and defecate on itself. If a pet has this you may feel like you do not know what to do. Indeed, it can be downright scary. Your dog having seizures becomes unresponsive to you and the world around it.

Food allergies and the chemicals such as preservatives and artificial flavor in foods can also be a cause. Poisoning, liver and kidney diseases, low blood sugar and tumors can cause seizures in pets.

Stay calm

Stay calm if your pet has a fit. If you pet is having seizures or just getting over one, dim the lights and cut off the TV get rid of loud noises. Make sure the feet are not pointed in your direction, and gently stroke the dog. Make sure furniture is not too close to the pet in case it has spasms. Speak softly and slowly to your canine in a calm way, as this will reassure it.

Take note

Make sure you note the time of day, the length of the time, and how long it took to recover completely from it. Events that trigger seizures need to be noted.

Diet

Diet and the type of food can sometimes be a cause of problems, a change in the type of food for older pets to a senior food will often reduce them dramatically.

Quiet time

A state of lethargy can occur after a episode. Allow your pet to rest after seizures. This is because after one the pet may mentally be lost or not quite "in". It can exhaust a pet.

Heart worm meds

Heartworm medications can make seizures more frequent and more severe, but the risk to the dog of becoming progressively disabled and death outweigh the benefit of not giving it the heartworm medications.

First time

If your pet is having a episode for the first time, you will want to call your vet and let him know. He will likely advice you to wait and see if another one ever occurs. If it does he will likely recommend test to determine if there is kidney or liver problems. If it is due to epilepsy, there are many medications available as well, which can help control canine seizures length, severity, and number of incidents.
