Is a Great Dane Suitable to Families with Kids?

Most of you have heard of the phrase "small dog, big attitude." Well, Great Dane aficionados would find delight in the fact that these dogs actually display the exact opposite of this temperament. Their size can be misleading but contrary to popular belief, dogs from this breed are extremely loving and affectionate - to the point that dog experts even refer to them as "gentle giants."

Most people also expect these dogs to be extremely agile and aggressive but, interestingly enough Great Danes are comically clumsy at times. Nonetheless they are great companion dogs. This just goes to show that when it comes to dealing with dogs, we can't really judge them by appearance.

This is one of the main reasons that Great Danes are perfect for families with kids.

By nature, these dogs are great with little children. In fact, they form a very distinct bond with their little human counterparts. Since they are extremely affectionate dogs, they enjoy constant attention and are very patient with enthusiastic and playful children. Another interesting fact is that Great Danes are extremely social dogs, which simply means that they display a natural need to be around people.

As a friendly reminder, you shouldn't misinterpret the actions of a Great Dane.

Because of their size, it's hard to realize the motives behind their action. Most people are quick to think that big dogs are generally aggressive and dangerous. But sometimes, Great Danes are just so loving and affectionate that they can't help but pounce or lunge on their other family members. Of course, most people wouldn't find it strange if a dog from a smaller breed does this as an act of excitement once a family member comes to welcome it. The same goes for Great Danes. Just bear in mind that their actions are all out of genuine love.

Even with the comfort of knowing that Great Danes are gentle giants, it's always helpful to be cautious.

Just because it's perfectly fine to have Great Danes around children, doesn't mean that they don't have boundaries either. Simple things such as not having children ride Great Danes on their backs like a horse, or not disturbing them when they are eating or chewing on their favorite toy must always be observed. And until the Great Dane is completely familiar with the child, it would always be a good idea to keep an eye on them - especially when you are having children of visitors come over or if you take your dog out in public spaces.

Other than that, Great Danes are perfect for families with little ones. If anything, they're simply like life-size stuffed animals... with added perks!
