Dog Food Rating - Home Made Is Best

The title says it all. If you take even a little bit of care in selecting ingredients and preparation, food you make yourself for your dog will be better than even the best commercial dog food. Food you make yourself will be worlds better than the average popular commercial brands. Period. Let's look at some of the reasons home made dog food should top the list of any dog food rating chart.

Have you ever read the list of ingredients in an average can of dog food? If you have, do you know what those ingredients really are? For example, a lot of dog foods contain "meat by-products". Do you know what they are? According to the Association of American Feed Control Officials it is:

"The non-rendered, clean parts, other than meat, derived from slaughtered mammals. It includes, but is not limited to, lungs, spleen, kidneys, brain, livers, blood, bone, partially defatted low temperature fatty tissue, and stomachs and intestines freed of their contents. It does not include hair, horns, teeth and hoofs."

Note it says derived from slaughtered "mammals". I'll bet you thought these by-products were from cows, especially if the can's label said something like "Beef Entree". The mammal can be any source - goats, pigs, horses, even euthanized animals from animal shelters. Diseased or dying animals can be used as well.

When you decide to cook food for your dog, where do you get the raw ingredients? You go to the grocery store and get the same beef, chicken, pork, vegetables, and grains you would eat yourself. You certainly don't go looking for "animal by-products".

Even dog foods that don't contain by-products are using cuts of meat that wouldn't be eaten by humans. It's a profit thing. If a cut of meat can be packaged and sold to people, it will bring a higher price than it would as animal feed.

So, if you really care about your dog's health and nutrition, cook your pet's food yourself. The food you prepare for your pet will be prepared with greater care and love than even the best commercial dog food, and will easily top the chart of any dog food rating.
