All About the Feist Dog Breed When Compared with Hound Dog Breeds

Many written accounts of dogs have been found various literary researches that date back to centuries. When we are talking of Fiest, a dog TYPE (generally not regarded as a breed) in particular, then it is not any new dog that we have come across in the last decade.

The poem 'The Beer Hunt's' also written about Feist, where in; it was mentioned as Fice; the poem was written by Abraham Lincoln. Feist is a breed of dogs that is quite small in terms of size and shape (often shorter than 18 inches/45 cm). These dogs weigh less than 30 lbs/14 Kg; their ears are placed high on their heads and the ears can be either button like, short & hanging or, erect. These dogs have long legs, a short coat and a nose that is quite pointy. Their tail is either docked or bobtailed. They are known for their hunting skills more than for being show dogs. Their talents lie in hunting.

They may be either fine purebred (only two are recognized as actual breeds), mixed bred or crossed bred and are mostly identified for their fine hunting skills more than their looks and appearances.

Feists hunt down squirrels, rodents, badgers, European rabbits; and they love chasing these little creatures.

Fiest dog breeds are known for treeing; they locate their prey by keeping still and by using their eyes, ears and nose; and one they are able to locate it, they go ahead and begin their chase by treeing; once they have treed a squirrel, they will chase it continuously until it has been hunted down or has left the dog's area of vision.

Some of the best breeds of Fests are listed below -

The funny part about the chase is that, although these dogs put up a great chase, they never really catch a squirrel, or at least not most of the time; because they expect their owners to shoot them and do the job! A fiest dog is one of the dog 'types' (breeds) bred in the rural southern United Stated; there are majorly bred to hunt squirrels and for other such small games.

Now, hound dog breeds on the other hand are hunter dogs too, but don't begin their chase at the sight of a squirrel (unless they are of the sight hound breed). A hound can be trained to hunt and to do certain things, but then; these dogs don't just pounce upon the job at once, they want to understand why they have to do the job, however if the job to them seems not worthy enough; they simply ignore you!

Two of the major Hound dog breeds : those that hunt by tracking scent, and the other type that hunts using their eyesight!

The Coats of Hounds vary; it can be short, smooth or long. Some of the best breeds you should have a look at when it comes to Hound Dog breeds are listed below -

  • Afghan Hound
  • American Foxhound
  • Basenji
  • Basset Hound
  • Black and Tan Coonhound

No matter, what personalities these dogs behold; no matter, how well they hunt; no matter, what their talents are; one thing, that will never change is their 'cuteness quotient' that has never failed to bewilder us!
