Collect the supplies you will need during the delivery before your dog goes into labor, and visit the veterinarian regularly during the pregnancy. If a puppy is stuck during birthing, you can take certain steps to help but they require extra preparation. Wait for signs of discomfort from the mother before intervening during labor -- dogs will sometimes take short breaks during delivery and should not be interrupted if the labor is normal.

Things Needed

• Latex gloves
• Non-petroleum based lubricant
• Scissors
• Cotton swabs
• Clean cloths that can be discarded
• Small rubber bands

Step 1

Put on the gloves, then apply a pea sized dab of lubricant to the first two fingers. Insert one finger into the birthing canal.

Step 2

Gently hook your finger under the legs of the puppy, then slowly pull. Time your efforts to the mother's contractions, but do not apply excessive pressure to the newborn.

Step 3

Clamp the umbilical cord with an elastic. Cut the umbilical cord and wrap the newborn in a clean towel. Gently clear fluids away from the puppy's nose and mouth.

Step 4

Place the mother with the puppies when the litter is delivered to encourage licking, which stimulates breathing in the young pups.
