Crate training your dog really isn't all that difficult. But, as long as no one is home you should never just let them roam around freely. To start crate training your dog you should get them when they're young.

Place you dog in a crate with their favorite toys while you are out and about. To your dog, it will be like their living space and they won't tear it up once they are in the swing of being there day in and day out.

Another part of crate training your dog would be as soon as you get back to the house take your dog out for a walk. The thing is they have been holding their bladder and bowel movements all day or for the time you were out. So during the beginning stages of this training make sure you leave them in the crate with their favorite toy.

This should be done shortly until your dog learns and is able to hold themselves from using the bathroom. If you're with someone else let them take the dog out when they see the dog sniffing around. If it's just you then that's a different story - a special case.

Make sure that when crate training your dog you do not use the crate as a way to punish your dog for leaving something out on the floor. This will make them despise the crate and they will make it hard for you to put them in the crate. Limit the times you put your dog into the crate when you're going to be gone. This can be for a short amount of time or a long amount of time.

At the start of crate training your dog, use a toy to get them to do the things you want them to do. Give them praise for doing what you tell them. Be careful not to be too hard on them if you do come home and see a mess in the crate. Remember, when you come home give them ample time to sniff around and find a spot.

When they do, reward them with a treat in order for them to associate that as a good thing. If they don't do anything then just bring them in. Some dogs go through several dog toys. They're kind of like us. After a while they get tired of the same toys. So you may need several. Buying one they'll like will keep them content and very happy.
