Train Your Boxer Dog The Right Way

 

If you have an older dog, training them is often a bit harder than training a puppy but if they have developed bad habits then you should give some training to maintain some peace in your household.


Not all older dogs fall into the category of "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", but bear in mind this does ring true for some dogs. Older dogs are harder to train because they have become set in their ways which makes it more difficult for the brain to learn new things.

Compared to training a young puppy, training an adult dog does in fact have some advantages. Puppies are more likely to become distracted very easily compared to your older dog who will be calmer and have a much longer attention span when you are training them!

You need to make sure that before you start the training that it is clear that the dog understands that you are the leader of the pack and in charge.


A dog that has been adopted from the pound may never have been housetrained therefore you might find you have to start right at the basics. The process is the same, requiring frequent trips to the toilet outside with lots of praise and you will find that this will need to be quite intensive at the beginning but should lessen off as they start to learn.

Adult obedience classes may be required for your Boxer if they do not know the basic commands of sit or stay. If this is not within you budget you can try to train them at home, just make sure you focus on one command at a time and operate on a reward's based system.
