Dogs... Masters Of Our Universe

Dogs are the greatest companion animals... Period.
This is sure to rouse the ire of any cat lover, but I cannot see how someone cannot like dogs, or love dogs. They are the greatest companion animals in our society.

That is my opinion of course.

As legend has it, and which is probably true, the humans from our past realized the benefit of keeping them near the camp. The wolves; and what soon became dogs, began to realize they would be thrown a few scraps of food in return for staying near the camp. The presence of these canines was probably a deterrent in keeping the large cats, bears or other dangerous predators at bay. The canines got what they wanted, and the humans did as well.

Wolves became dogs which then became domesticated. Dogs then became our pets, as well as guardians, and even a food source. Fortunately dogs are not considered a food source in most parts of the world any longer, and are simply revered as pets.

In just the past 15 years the place of dogs in the family has changed. They spend more time in the family dwelling and less time in the backyard. They may spend more time sleeping on the bed with their humans, and less time in their own doghouse.

Dogs are also used in many roles which may be as diverse as the breeds themselves. Over the years dogs have been selectively bred to be more efficient hunters, herding dogs, or guard dogs. More recently they have been trained to assist a physically challenged person around the house or to serve as the eyes of a visually challenged person. They are also trained to assist the Police in apprehensions and narcotics detection.

Try to get a cat to do any of that.

People are also spending much more on their dogs then ever before, not just for premium dog food but for medical care as well. Veterinary care has come a long way in just the last 20 years. There are Veterinary specialties for oncology and orthopedics as well as many other disciplines.

In the past a dog was not taken to the vet unless it was obviously sick, and sometimes not even then.
Today more dogs are being taken in for routine checkups than ever before. There are also more effective preventative treatments available today to prevent parasitic infestations, such as heartworms.

Go to any pet store and you will find a wide variety of dog food and treats. Back in the day you might find three or four brands of dog food at the market and the only treats you would find were Milk Bones. Now there are literally hundreds of types of dog food in all price ranges. The dog treats have expanded as well into more flavorful and delectable varieties sure to satisfy even the most finicky eater. Our dogs have become our family members, and it shows.

In our world today the place of the dog has changed from the scraggly mutt sleeping on the porch to the groomed companion sleeping at our feet, or in our bed. The dog has become the king of his domain and the master of his universe.
