The Health Benefits Of A Cat Fountain

If you are anything like me (before I started researching the subject), you probably think that a cat fountain to give your cat running water to drink is perhaps a luxury too far. However, once I started researching, I found that there are lots of reasons why so many vets advocate using a pet fountain to provide drinking water for your cat - but you need to know which type to buy.

You might never have even thought about buying a cat fountain for your cat. It is instinctive for a cat to prefer to drink running water - you may have a cat who likes to try and drink from a running faucet! Getting plenty of fresh water to drink is important for all cats and even more so if you feed him a dry food diet. Perhaps you are a little concerned that your cat is not drinking enough.

There are many different cat fountains on the market and they seem to attract rather mixed reviews - some score excellently, whilst others do less well. I am so pleased with the model I ultimately chose and which I was able to buy online at a really good price. The filters also work out to be quite inexpensive. I am now very glad that I have purchased a cat fountain and my cat likes it too - I now realise why vets are so keen on them.

A cat fountain with fresh, clean, running water will help your cat to drink more water. This will keep him hydrated and help to avoid health problems. Some of the health problems that cats can suffer from if they are dehydrated include urinary infections and kidney disfunction.

Cats are prone to a condition called feline acne on their chins. This is caused by bacterial infection. The bacteria can be harboured unseen in scratches that get caused through daily use of plastic bowls. For this reason, a cat fountain made of ceramic or stainless steel is recommended.

Another thing to look out for is the motor, it needs to be nice and quiet. The last thing you want to happen is for your cat to be scared off by the sound of a noisy pump and for this to stop him from taking a drink. A pet fountain also needs to be really quick and easy to clean. You do not want one that is difficult or time consuming to clean. If you choose one like the one I bought, it is really simple, just lift out the pump, wash the bowl and pop it back together again! Filter costs are an important factor too, they need to last a good while as well as be a reasonable price to replace.

Finally, you need to choose one with a large capacity. You need your pet fountain to hold enough water for a couple of days if you just have one cat. If you have several cats, it should hold enough water so that you only need to top it up once a day at most.
