Answer
Hi, Peter.  Thanks for posting!

I don't believe this is a matter of whether it's a good idea or not, but rather what your preferences are for your living arrangements with your bird.  Birds can get used to just about any situation!

If you have a need to have a sleeping cage for your tiel and a different cage for other activities, it's OK to do this.  I just recommend you acclimate your tiel to the new cage gradually, i.e., before allowing s/he to stay in it overnight, gradually get s/he used to the new cage by placing s/he in it a time or two the first day, several times another day, etc., until your tiel is comfortable with it.  Otherwise, s/he might get frightened during the night and flap uncontrollably, which could result in injury.

A parakeet sized cage is too small for a tiel, even to sleep in.  A tiel's cage, even a sleep cage, must be large enough for the tiel to flap it's wings without touching any part of the cage.  Also, his/her tail and head can't touch either the top or bottom of the cage or anything inside the cage, such as dishes, perches, toys, etc.  Even though the bird will just be sleeping in it, you don't know when your tiel might want to stretch it's wings, etc., and the cage must be large enough or his/her wings can get caught in the cage wire and cause injury, etc.  You don't necessarily have to have all the feed dishes in the sleep cage, but you should provide water at least in case your tiel gets thirsty.

Come back if you have further questions.
