The community of vegans is growing! According to a Zogby poll of Americans conducted in 2000 (the most recent official poll), at that time there were 4.7 million vegetarians and 1.7 million vegans. This amounts to 2.5 percent of adults being vegetarian and .9 percent being vegan

Many people are vegetarians and vegans for numerous reasons. Dietary restrictions, religious beliefs, health or personal choice could be reasons for excluding meat, eggs, dairy products and animal-derived products from your diet.

If you ask any vegan what he or she misses the most from a vegan diet, what do you think the answer would be? Many will tell you that it is delicious chocolate. Chocolate is not within the dietary restrictions of a typical vegan. Almost all chocolate has milk, or at the very least whey, which is a milk derivative. Dark chocolate bars do not contain milk, but are not a popular option because of their bitter flavor. So, most vegans are always on the look out to quench their cacao cravings with something that tastes of genuine chocolate.

The Vegan-Chocolate Dilemma
Without meat or dairy products, a vegan diet tends to lean more on the high-carb side. Carbohydrates give a burst of energy that is short-lived. As a result, vegans are more likely to feel hungry sooner. Carbohydrates are usually high-calorie foods as well. More calories result in weight gain and other complications related to weight gain.

A high-carb diet can also result in sluggishness. Fruits and vegetables are extremely healthy, but they are unable to supply long-lasting energy. By 3 p.m. or late afternoon energy levels have depleted and there is need for an energy boost! In fact, vegans may find themselves needing a pick-me-up several times during the day. Because the body does not feel satiated with a high-carb diet, it tends to crave more for sweets and chocolates to compensate.

There are vegan bars of chocolate, vegan brownies, vegan chocolate mousseall made from pure vegan chocolate. A wide assortment of vegan chocolates is available in the market but not many of them taste as good as the real thing. Too often, vegans have to settle for substitutes that dont really satisfy their craving for chocolate. Or, vegans simply try and live without chocolate, which according to research, may not be the best choice.
