How to Potty Train Using A Dog Training Bell

How to Potty Train Using A Dog Training Bell. A dog training bell can be an awesome way to get your dog house broken. Younger dogs are easier to train using a bell, but even older dogs can learn this very useful trick.

Things Needed

  • Small bell
  • String

Step 1

Attach a small bell to a string and secure it to the door you want your dog to use. Make sure it is not too long, but long enough that your dog can easily make it ring with their nose.

Step 2

Watch your dog. Anytime he looks he might need to go outdoors, or after he eats, or wakes up, take him over to the door and gently ring the bell. Then open the door and let your dog out. Once he has done his business outside, be sure to give him plenty of positive praise to let him know he did right.

Step 3

Once your dog is used to the bell ringing each time the door opens so he can go outside and go potty, make your dog ring the bell himself. When he needs to go out (at this point he should be going to the door), show him how to gently bump the bell to make it ring. Once he has successfully rung the bell, open the door and let him take care of business.

Step 4

Before too long, the dog will make the connection and begin ringing the bell on his own when he needs to go out. You can relax no longer having to watch his every move to avoid an accident in the house and your dog will feel great about himself that he has learned to do something that makes his owner so happy.

Warnings

  • Always use a lot of good positive praise when your dog shows the behaviors you are trying to teach him.
  • Be patient it may take a bit of time for your dog to figure it out.

Warnings

  • Never react negatively or shout or hit your dog for messing in the house. This will not teach him anything but aggression and fear.
