Tips on Training a Pitbull Puppy

Tips on Training a Pitbull Puppy. Pitbull puppies are strong, willful animals. They are not the easiest to train, but good training can help you have a loyal, obedient friend for life. Training a pitbull puppy is possible; the trick is knowing where to start.

Positive Reinforcement is Key

Many pitbull puppy owners make the mistake of forgetting the importance of positive reinforcement. While many pet owners believe negative reinforcement is the way to go, this is not the kind of thing that sticks in a dog's head. Lots of praise, attention and treats are the best way to reward good behavior. Lack of these things is negative reinforcement enough.

Consistency is Key

Pitbull puppies, or any puppies for that matter, cannot learn without a consistent training schedule. This means you must work on it every day--and without fail. Always have treats, always be ready to praise and always be ready to deter bad behavior.

Enforcing Rules and Training

This goes along with consistency. Rules and training must always be enforced in order for them to become a way of life for your puppy. If your puppy isn't allowed on the couch, never allow him on the couch--even when you are feeling cuddly. When you fail to enforce training, it gives your dog the wrong idea. Remember, you are the boss.

Training Takes Time

Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will a perfectly behaved pitbull puppy. If you use these tips and remain consistent, you will have a loyal and obedient dog before you know it.
