What You Should Ask When Traveling With a Pet

Many families bring their pets with them on holidays, staying in "pet-friendly" hotels, motels, cottages, and resorts. Here's a quick list of questions to ask your lodging if you plan to bring your pet along. Remember to always mention your pets when making reservations!

- Pet surcharges: Are any "pet fees" applicable to your stay? Is the fee per pet? Is the fee "per day" or "per stay"?

- Types of pets allowed: this is particularly important if you plan to travel with something other than a dog (many places permit dogs, but may not even permit cats, let alone reptiles, birds, and other pets).

- Size restrictions: some accommodations will only permit pets under a certain size or weight limit.

- Maximum number of pets permitted. Although some lodgings don't have a limit, the size of the room may not be practical if you're bringing several pets!

- Non-smoking vs. smoking rooms: due to allergy concerns, an accommodation may permit pets in smoking rooms only.

- Pet rules/restrictions. For instance, most lodgings ask that pets not be allowed on furniture, and that they be leashed in common areas. Many also state that pets cannot be left unattended in rooms (if you plan to go places where your pet cannot accompany you, ask if your lodging offers pet-sitting services or if they can recommend a doggy daycare).

- Be aware of local pet laws or by-laws. There are the usual "poop-'n-scoop" laws, and leash laws ... but some municipalities do not permit certain controversial dog breeds, such as pitbulls. If you would like to travel with such a breed, please call the local Animal Control department to ensure your pet can safely accompany you on your travels.

- Welcome goodies, amenities for pets: some places will offer a welcome treat for your furry friend, or perhaps a list of dog-friendly parks near the accommodation. .
