The United States economy is showing signs of recovery as these top 10 companies take the first steps in hiring people from the jobless pool.

Currently, tens of thousands of job openings are posted in the jobs collection site Indeed.com with top companies such as Blockbuster, Lowe's, Bank of America and Lockheed leading the way.

Although this does not exactly reflect an accurate picture of events in the current US job market, things are looking up. On the Indeed.com site, online postings frequently remain up after positions have been filled, and some companies will still lists jobs whether or not it has openings, like Blockbuster because it has to deal with the constant turnover of workers at its 3,000 stores across the country, so it's eager to attract a steady stream of applicants.

Indeed.com crawls job listings from a multitude of job websites large and small, from Jobstreet, CareerBuilder and Monster, to online publications and classified ads and from a private companies' own sites.

Currently, the company that ranks No. 1 on Indeed's big company hiring list is Blockbuster, and may be a surprise to some, since it has been struggling lately with its financial health fighting off online competition like Netflix.

Part of the reason Blockbuster is number 1 is because it is constantly hiring and re-hiring for positions that people vacate easily for better offerings. Blockbuster has a high churn rate for retail positions. Only 21 of the 12,800 postings are for corporate jobs, as opposed to retail positions.

At Indeed.com's No. 2 ranking company, Lowe's, it's hiring comes from its seasonal hiring for spring. The home improvement company's nationwide retail reach, and a good deal of the job listings are for seasonal work. "Spring is like our Christmas," says Katie Cody, a spokeswoman.

At Indeed's No. 4 ranking company, Petco, many of the jobs are also at retail outlets, but the outlook is very optimistic as demand for pet care products and services never waned in the face of economic recession.

"We are continuing to grow and hire," reports the company's head of human resources, Charlie Piscitello. "We're happy to report at Petco that the human-animal bond is alive and well. People increasingly treat their pets as family members."

Economic recession isn't a bane to all companies. McDonald's, in anticipation that people will eat less at posh and fine dining restaurants, is on a hiring binge to fill positions it needs to meet an increased customer base.
