Reptile Pets

There are many reptiles and amphibians that make excellent pets when they are properly cared for. Snakes, frogs, turtles, and lizards are the most common types of reptile pets that you will find in today's pet stores. Prices for such exotic pets are usually a little bit more depending on what species and type of breed you are looking for.

Snakes are probably the most common reptile pets that people own today. While most people are frightened by them, others find them fascinating to watch. Most snakes that people own are the non-poisonous type. Usually they are constrictor type. Constrictor breeds usually kill their prey by suffocating them. Squeezing their prey until it crushes everything inside.

Snakes are more popular than any other reptile pet due to the fact that they are quite easy to care for. All they require is a clean aquarium with a heat rock or artificial sun light and a nice little cubby hole for them to hide in when they do not want to be disturbed. Most hatchlings will start off with frozen baby mice to eat. You have to thaw them before feeding them to the snake first. As they get older you will want to start feeding them live mice or rats depending on how big the snake gets.

Next in line are the lizards. While there are many type of lizards to choose from most people will either choose the green iguana or terrapin lizards. The green iguana is relatively calm and docile when raised in captivity. They usually grow between two to three feet long depending how big their environment is and their diet. Their diet may consist of a protein supplement and a variety of different vegetables and fruits.

The terrapin lizards are quite small in nature and are most favored by parents who do not want their child to have a snake or iguana. Their diet consists of insects and a protein supplement as well. Most children like them because they are small enough for them to handle and care for. They also change colors depending on how hot or cold their environment is.

If you are going to purchase a reptile for a pet, make sure you read up on the proper care and maintenance before purchasing the pet. Always ask a professional or expert for advice and tips on how to care for your pet, and make sure you have a vet thoroughly check the reptile for any illness or diseases before purchasing as well. This could save you from having to spend more money than you would want on a sick pet.
