Three Key Things to Keep in Mind When Training Your Parrot to Talk

2016/5/4 10:37:24

Almost all parrots have the capacity for speech. It's one of the biggest attractions for parrot parents, but it quickly becomes frustrating and disappointing when the birds don't seem to catch on. Take heart, it's easier than you think! Teaching your parrot to speak is very rewarding, and can be accomplished easily, as long as you keep three things in mind: patience, repetition, and dedication..

Patience - This is the single most important factor in training parrots, especially in regards to speech training. Each parrot learns at its own pace, and results take time. It's essential that you don't get angry with, or yell at, your parrot. Birds can sense emotions from their owners, and negative emotions will have a detrimental effect on your relationship. Building trust is the first stepping stone in any training regimen, and it can't be rushed. Understand that making human sounds is difficult for parrots. Take your time, and be gentle.

Repetition - Remaining consistent in your training techniques will yield amazing results. Repetition is the method by which parrots learn how to make the sounds necessary to talk. It's essential that you repeat each word or phrase over and over again. Be sure to enunciate each sound clearly. A good rule of thumb is to spend, at a minimum, one hour each day constantly repeating the word or phrase you're trying to teach them to say. Once your parrot starts trying to make words, be consistent in your praise as well. It will take no time for them to make the connection between speech and a treat.

Dedication - As with any task, dedication is key. Once you set out to start training your parrot to speak, keep at it. Don't stop if you don't see immediate results. Continue your daily sessions. Parrots want to please you, and given time and proper training techniques, they won't disappoint. You must remain dedicated to the task if you wish to achieve results. Even after your parrot has starting speaking, dedication is required to build its vocabulary and keep the words fresh in its memory.

If you remain dedicated to the task, patient with your parrot, and continue to repeat the sounds on a regular basis, there is no doubt that your parrot will be talking in no time. Then, it's just a simple matter of introducing new words and sounds. Before you know it, your bird will be fluent!
