There is a large variety of foods to feed the birds. Bird seeds are the most common food that is being used. You can create you own suet by melting the meat fat and the just add some berries, seeds and some other ingredients with the fat and then mix it well together.

Nectar is another kind of bird food that is commonly used for humming birds. It is a mixture of water and sugar. This too you can make yourself by boiling four parts of water and then add one part sugar and then just mix it together and let it sit so it will then cool off.

The humming birds are attracted to the color of red as it was once practiced to add red food coloring to the home made bird food. Should you really want to make sure that they will come to feed from the feeders, you can plant several flowers with some red blooms or even try tying a few red ribbons to the bird feeder. This should help you a little with feeding your fine feathered friends as they are sure to enjoy your company as you will enjoy theirs.
