Adopting a puppy is probably the most exciting time once you have made the decision to get one, it feels like Christmas all over again, however before you make a snap decision to getting a puppy there are a few things to consider.

The primary question is are you planning to adopt a free puppy or planning on buying one? This may not seem important but it is for many reasons.

Let's look at the options first at the free option, its great to get something free, but this does depend on your circumstances to whether this is going to be suitable for you and your family.

If you adopt a free puppy then the reasons are it may be someone you know or a neighbour that their dog as fallen pregnant and given birth to several beautiful young pups. They are at this stage in a bit of predicament whether to give them away or have them put down, the second option is not very appealing so the first option is the obvious path for the owners.

On the other hand it does depend on the breed of dog to whether this is going to be suitable for you, for example; is the dog going to out grow the area available in your home? You don't want to be getting a dog which when fully grown takes over the house and garden.

Do you have young children? In which case you want a dog that is tolerant around children, some dogs can turn quite nasty and nip and bite when they are poked a prodded by children.

A further consideration to the free puppy option is in most cases it is not going to be a thorough bred, unless the breeders have the dog and the bitch that have mated, but if not it could be any dog in the neighbourhood so you can not be certain how the dog will be as an adult as far as temperament is concerned.

With regards to the paid option then you have the opportunity to investigate the situation to the fullest extent, you will have a choice of what breed of dog you would like, for example if you have children then choose a breed of dog that loves children. But you may want a dog for protection in which case your choices would be totally different.

You may be planning on breeding dogs in which case it would be essential to buy a dog and a bitch which you know there background and history.

Some dogs need more exercise than others, however they all need a certain amount of it and that should also be considered.

Do you work long hours leaving the dog on its own all day? In which case you might reconsider getting a puppy in the first place, you don't want to get a puppy that is trapped in a house all day on its own, you could come home to a train wreck in your house plus a very unhappy puppy, the facts are all dogs need attention just like we do.

And finally the health of a dog is arguably the most important what you don't want to be doing is getting a puppy from a unhealthy family of dogs, this can lead to ongoing veterinarian bills that can empty your bank account plus all the stress that goes with it.

These are just a few pointers to take into consideration before getting a puppy. I regret I am only able to touch the fringe in this short article, however hope this has put you on the right track.
