2016/5/4 10:28:55

One of the first things that you would want to teach your dog, is to sit on command. Luckily it is very easy to teach a dog to sit, and most dogs respond very well to the method which I am going to share with you in this article.

Before we begin with the training instructions, there is a few general facts on dogs, that I want to let you in on. This can help you to better understand how your dog thinks. When you have a better understanding for your dogs way of thought, you will find that it will be much more easy to teach the dog new things.

A dogs brain, spends a lot of its resources on interpreting smells, and when it is busy doing that, the rest of the body runs on the dogs instincts. We are going to make good use of this knowledge later on in our training. A dog is also easily distracted, and you should always make sure that you and your dog are in a calm and well-known area, before you start any training. This is especially important with puppies, as they tend to be more energetic than older dogs.

Let us begin with the tips on how to teach a dog to sit.

Stand up and face your dog! Hold a goody in either one of your hands.

Let the dog see and smell the goody and then steer the hand with the treat over the dogs head and towards his tail.

Your dog will be to busy with the goody to think about what his body does, so he will instinctively begin to sit down, in order to follow the treat that is passing over his head.

When the dog enters a sitting position, you must say "Sit" with a clear voice, and then reward the dog with the goody and kind praises in a gentle tone.

You then repeat this technique five to seven times, but no more than that.

The lesson can be done up to ten times a day, but make sure that you spread it out evenly, so your dog will not grow tired with the training. If you follow this method, you should normally see good results within no more than a week or so. You should cut out the goodies as soon as possible, and also begin to train the dog on the sit command in other places that might be more stressful and difficult for the dog.

Good luck with the training.
