Summer Hacking: The Perfect Riding Jacket

2016/5/4 10:26:41

Everyone has their own idea of a perfect hack. A long, warm summer's day, going for a leisurely wander and taking a picnic or a fast paced gallop across autumn stubble fields. Whatever your vision, it is inevitable that you will need to be prepared for all occasions, as very often the weather doesn't play along with our well-laid plans.

When looking for a horse riding coat, especially for hacking, there are many factors you will have to draft into your decision making process. Firstly, you might want to consider the weight of the riding jacket; for long summer hacks, lightweight is essential. This way, you can tie it to your saddle, or put it into a saddlebag without putting any extra pressure on your horse. Then you have access to a riding jacket just in case of a summer downpour! Breathability and wicking properties will also be important requirements of your horse riding coat, as even summer rain can be warm, and nobody wants to feel sticky and hot whilst riding. Try and do some research into technical fabrics, and which are the most effective with best value for money.

A reflective riding coat may benefit you at any time of year, so never underestimate your safety; even sunshine on the road can temporarily blind drivers. Full fluorescent riding jackets are available, with reflective strips; these could significantly increase your safety on horseback whilst also keeping you dry and cool. Winter varieties are also available, or perhaps try and find one with a zip-out lining for the best of both worlds - and value for money!

Consider the style of horse riding coat you require. A blouson style may be more loose-fitting and comfortable in warmer weather, and they come in varying thicknesses. Some thick fleece-lined blouson riding jackets are very effective in the winter months, whereas you can also purchase wafer-thin one-layer blousons, almost like a rain sheet just to keep the water off in summer. However, you may wish to opt for a more figure hugging style of horse riding coat, if you are amongst the trend-setters! Smart, quality waterproofs in professional colour schemes can be obtained in very flattering cuts, and can really make the most of your figure. If possible, try on a riding coat with a different style to one you might usually choose - you might surprise yourself!

If going somewhere smart, such as an organised ride for a special occasion, you might need a traditional-style hacking jacket. These are also acceptable for hunting, but can be quite cumbersome and restrictive in the heat. However they will be invaluable for your summer showing regime!

Obviously, your budget will influence your choice, but aim to purchase a quality horse riding coat which will last you several years. Ultimately, try to buy a riding jacket that you can attach easily to your saddle without restricting your horse's movement. Then you can be assured that your pleasurable summer's hack has an insurance policy for when the rain crashes your party!
