Amboina King parrots are also referred to as Amboyna King Parrots and also due to where they can be found, the Ambon King parrots and the Moluccan King parrots being indigenous to the Moluccan and Ambon Islands which are part of a small archipelago in Indonesia. This means that they are most at home in warm, moist, tropical and sub tropical conditions.

Amboina King parrots are a very attractive and are a striking red in color with sharply contrasting green wings and stunning blue areas located on their wing tips, tails and backs. On the underside of their body they have either a dark grey or black coloring with some pink peripheral color splashes and some blue splashes on the predominately black tail.

These particular parrots are decreasing in number due to their natural habitat being destroyed by human intervention and although these birds are legally owned by breeders and pet owners they can prove quite expensive around $600 - $800 and in certain areas quite difficult to obtain. In fact some of the more entrepreneurial owners have decided that they can actually make a supplementary income by breeding 2 Amboina King's, so they get they pleasure of these birds as well as income when they successfully rear a clutch of babies, the average clutch being 3 eggs. Obviously there is a lot involved in breeding any parrot species and if you are tempted then you would need to research the breeding and rearing process thoroughly and be warned it is impossible to tell a male Amboina King from a female without a DNA test.

They are regarded as a medium sized parrot and will grow to around 12 to 15 inches and including the length of the tail their overall length is close approaching 20 inches. Amboina King parrots have a lifespan of between 20 to 30 years and this is an important factor if you are considering taking on one as a pet, as they can be with you for a substantial part of your life.

Amboina's are one of the quieter species of parrot. The loudest squawk you will hear from them is when something is wrong and they are alarmed, other than that they are not known to constantly chatter or make noises and also their voices are relatively soft so they can be considered as a pet if you live in an apartment block or where you have to consider the neighbours. Having said that they are extremely intelligent and have the ability to talk and mimic sounds around them and when suitably trained they are extremely enjoyable to engage with.

Amboina King parrots make ideal pets with their combination of beauty and brains coupled with their slightly easier going nature than many other parrot species.
