Did you know that periodontal disease is the most commonly diagnosed health problem in dogs?

Although most American homes own at least one dog, they are almost completely unaware of the greatest health risk that their dogs might encounter and it is the most usually neglected part of their health care which is their oral health. So what do we know about this disease and how could we prevent it?

Advanced periodontal disease could be acquired by a large percentage of dogs before they reach four years of age. The most common signs of which are loose teeth, bleeding gums, foul dog breath, painfulness in the mouth, and also infections of the liver, kidney, and the heart. So how do our dogs acquire this disease?

It all starts when there are left-over foods that get stuck between the teeth and are not removed by brushing. Bacteria will begin to feed on that along on the gum line and then spread to the other teeth. This will turn into plaque which in turn will form into tartar. The dog's gums will begin to swell and pockets of air will form along the gums which would serve as harbors for invading bacteria, which could lead to more serious health problems for your dog.

So how can we avoid periodontal disease from happening to our dogs?

One way is by brushing your dog's teeth regularly to avoid the build-up of plaque. A lot of dog owners have never attempted to do this on their dogs and only a very few try to do it regularly.

Another, is through the use of Oravet which is a special gel created to seal off your dog's gums from harmful bacteria which may cling to their teeth and gums. It also helps prevent the development of plaque thereby reducing your dog's chances of having oral problems. This product needs only to be applied at least twice a week and contains no odor or taste that may offend your dog, hence, it is easier to apply it on your dog because they will not be really annoyed with it.

Periodontal disease is very rampant on dogs. But, this most frequently diagnosed disease could be avoided if the owner takes the initial steps before it becomes a big problem. By the simple brushing of your dog's teeth, you may greatly reduce the risks of your dog getting this disease and avoid any further complications stemming from this oral disease.
