Preparation & Planning Before Choosing the Right Dog

One of the great joys of the heart is getting a new dog. Whether you are starting out with a puppy or picking up your new pet from a rescue center there is always that excitement of the anticipation of creating a new found relationship between dog and owner. It is important to know the basics of dog training and pet care before you undertake this big step.

Some Considerations:

1. Are there other pets to share your time and efforts.

2. Are there children or family members in the home.

3. Will there be a reasonable sized yard or run for the dog.

4. Will there be others involved in providing care for the dog.

5. Is there a home for your new pet to stay in.

6. What size or breed of dog have you considered or are considering.

One option before you make a choice, is to visit with a Professional Dog Breeder. Animals available through a dog breeder are supposed to be checked for hereditary diseases and born under a controlled environment. In some cases they might also be able to offer documentation in the form of a pedigree, which avails the good traits of your specimen.

Dog breeders are a good choice when selecting a dog, a trained eye will be looking after your best interest during selection and care of the newborn creature. However, all this comes at a price. Other less expensive options exist, such as animal foundations or shelters, where homeless animals that have been abandoned by their owners are picked up cared for temporarily. There are a number of reasons why these pets have been left alone. In some cases their owner has died, or the family is no longer able to sustain them. These shelters will keep these dogs, pretty much the same way pet shops do. Want to be dog owners will come in and select one for their home.

These are just a few of the items that will need to be reviewed and discussed with others prior to obtaining your new family member. If anything goes unresolved the bigger the adjustment between pet and master.

The size and weight of your pet will be a big consideration in making a choice. For instance, you will need to consider lifting the dog into the tub for a bath or loading him into the car to take to the groomers. A toy Terrier will be much easier to load up than a Great Dane. These are seemingly small details but being unprepared for anything can cause great stress to both you and your dog.

Exercise is going to be critical. Will you have the time needed to walk your dog daily or have a regular schedule to walk? Is there a park nearby to use as an exercise ground? Again the small breed such as a toy poodle will require less exercise than a St Bernard. Will there always be someone around to provide the time and effort required for the dog's good health?

Grooming will need to be scheduled in on a regular basis. Will you be grooming the dog yourself or taking him to the local pet shop for his grooming? Without regular grooming, a dog can become unsightly and dirty. Are you prepared for the grooming and the cleanup if you use your own tub or bathroom? If you decide to have the grooming done at the shop then will you be scheduling the cleaning often enough that the pet doesn't pick up too much dirt or mud?

The home or environment you provide your pet could be the most important of all the considerations. There are breeds that require time and attention and there are those that may have for instance a thicker coat of hair and will need to home to be kept at a little lower temperature to assure a comfortable surroundings.

The dogs temperament is of great importance. If you are choosing a working breed, will you have a large yard or run for them to play in? If it's a small breed and will be in the home most of the time, besides house temperature, where will be doggie bathroom be and where will to nap site be?

Again, although it seems like a simple task, choosing the proper dog is a time consuming job but also very rewarding if you take you time and consider all the variables. Happy choosing.
