Dog Parks Benefit Owners and Their Pets

2016/5/4 10:23:15

Strict leash laws make it almost impossible for dog owners and their dogs to spend quality playtime together. To solve this problem several dog owners came up with the concept of dog parks. These park-like settings provide the perfect spot for the dogs and owners to exercise, play together, and bond and come with pet waste stations. Owners and city/town officials usually manage these places jointly. Money for the building and upkeep could come from several sources such as the city/town, dog owners, and fundraisers. Town after town, all over the US, has started establishing these parks for the benefit of the dogs, their owners, and the entire community.

Some of the benefits include the concept of responsible dog ownership, a place for the dogs to exercise and socialize with other dogs, less barking and destruction of property because the dogs have exercised, and the presence of the dogs and owners in the park will help discourage crime. Add the fact that dogs that play with other animals and people tend to react better to strangers. Fewer problems with the enforcement of leash laws, because the owners have a place to unleash their pets. Since the park is fenced, joggers, children, and other people will feel safer. Owners can socialize with other owners, which will give them the opportunity to share ideas with like-minded people on handling their respective dogs. A special dog area will create an area where dogs and their owners can play in a secure environment.

Most dog parks have equipment used to exercise and train your dog, which could include items like a frames for the dogs to walk up and down on, jumps, and hurdles, tires to jump through, teeter-totters, and weave poles. Water features such as fire hydrants that spray water, and of course drinking fountains for the dogs and the owners. There may also be items for the owners such as benches for relaxing and shaded areas. Of course bringing your dog to the park means you have to pick up their waste. As you look around the park, you will also see dog waste receptacles placed in convenient areas. You can find plastic mitt dispensers, which will protect your hand while you pick up the waste. The pet waste stations will make it easy for you to dispose them.

Establishing rules and enforcing them is an important part of having a successfully run dog park. The rules might include dogs in heat cannot use the park, they must have licenses, only healthy and inoculated dogs allowed, each dog should wear a collar and id tag, puppies under four months old are not allowed, and no aggressive animals permitted. Other owner duties include taking responsibility for any injuries caused by your pet; you must clean up after your dog, all dogs and young children must have constant supervision, and leash your dog prior to leaving. People who violate these rules face the possibility of having their park privileges suspended. Dog parks can make owning a pet a joy.
