German Shepherd Training Broken Down To Four Pieces

2016/5/4 10:21:59

German Shepherd training can be broken down to four pieces. The safezone is one of two things: You can give them a toy or praise or you can stop corrections. The unsafezone is also two things: You can stop giving them praise or reward or you can correct the dog.

This is the dictionary equivalent to operant conditioning and it works. Now, dogs are very black and white in the way they think. People on the other hand are extremely gray. So if I am in a bad mood I make the dog do something, if I am not in a bad mood I let them get away with it.

Let's say I am paying attention to the football game. I am mistakenly telling him not to do things he is not doing. All these things put a dog in a gray, very gray area. When a dog's in a gray area then he shows stress. He's not comfortable. He doesn't know what's happening. He has to over-read everything.

So, we want to be very black and white in our training, and if you can learn to communicate with them like this they get it right away. That's how they talk to each other.

If I had to have my dog in the house, and he was going to be a pet as well as a competition dog, then I need to teach him in two different languages. So, I teach the dog English for my house work, my easy walking, my heeling in the park not paying attention. All these kind of things come in English.

When I start teaching competition obedience when the dog's older then I teach that in German. And it's easy for the dog to understand, and two it's easy for them to understand that many commands. It's not difficult, so, he can work very well.

If I start using my competition commands in the house and not making the dog do them quickly and correctly, then he doesn't understand why I want to make him do it correctly and quickly when I am out on the field. So as long as I separate these things, it's easy for the dog to understand. Also, easy for the people in the house to understand. Your kids can walk them around using English commands and not take away from your competition work.

It's very important to have the dog used to a collar and leash. So if somebody holds my dog he's not fighting the leash. He understands what it's about. Alright now, this is very important for the puppies, too. A lot of people let their puppies run all over, and play with the other puppies and play with the other stuff. Maybe play with the big dogs.

Puppies can do no wrong. But, when it is time to put them away it is time to put them away. And, by that I mean, you don't want to leave them out, and keep getting them tired. So, I will bring them out and socialize them with the people a little bit. I don't let my puppies play with other puppies. I don't want other dogs dominating them.

When I am done socializing them they go in a crate. They come out and we do a little bit of rag work, or we do a little play work. I use that energy for recalls and vorauses. Then we put them back up, we come back later, we get them out, we do a little rag work for bitework, ok, and let them go and put them up on a good note.

We don't leave them out there seeing it for hours and hours and hours, then it means nothing to them. They get bored with it. When I want to work them they got no energy left. You want to bring a crate. You want them in a crate when you are not working, so they bottle up that energy that comes to the field for you.
