Dachshund Training: Why Is Leash Training Necessary?

Without proper dachshund training, a dachshund is more likely to become what every dog owner does not want to have - a pet with various behavior problems such as aggression, excessive barking, biting and others. Improper training or lack thereof, can also make you think that your pet is way behind compared to other dogs when it comes to intelligence since an untrained dog is less likely to respond correctly.

But what some owners failed to understand is the fact that, every dog is intelligent as long as they are given the opportunity to go through training. Though dachshund training is never an easy task, there are surefire ways on how to get positive results. One is through the use of different training tools such as the leash.

The leash, often attached to a collar, is one tool every dog owner should have. It is not just something you can use when leisurely walking with your pet nor restrain him in one corner of the house. What is important about leash during training is it's capacity to give you more control over your pet.

During leash training, the pet is trained a particular behavior or command. Once he is showing signs that he understands the principle of the command, the leash is then used to correct him should he disobey or do something that is not appropriate. Like for example if you are teaching him to come to you when called, if he starts to take the opposite direction instead of coming towards you, a slight tug of the leash can get his attention and hopefully make him realize that he is not doing the command correctly. In other words, the leash serves as a communication tool between you and your dog. If the leash is tugged, he should understand that he needs to modify what he is doing. No tugging, on the other hand, is an indication that you are okay with how things are going.

When using this tool during dachshund training, every dog owner must remember that the leash should not be abused neither be used with force to the point of hurting your dog. While firm handling is important, care must be taken so as to ensure your pet's safety and prevent him from creating negative association with the leash. Additionally, the leash should not be used to punish your pet for it will bring both of you no good.

Before using this tool during dachshund training, make sure that your pet has gotten used not just to leash but to collar as well.
