Train Your Dog To Fetch A Beer From The Fridge

2016/5/4 10:19:45

Have you seen those TV ads where the guy is watching football and he tells his dog to go get him a beer? Would you like to teach our own canine that trick? Can you just imagine showing your friends that trick during the next super bowl party? What a hit your four legged friend would be!

Well, here is how to get started. First find a short piece of thick rope to begin playing tug with your dog. Make him pull on the rope hard for a while before giving in to him and letting him have the rope. Right at that point; give him his favorite treat after he drops the rope. It is important that he drops the rope before he gets the treat.

Do this every day 5 or 6 times for several weeks. Gradually move the fun into the kitchen and do it near the fridge. Oh, I forgot to mention, to say the phrase get-me-a-beer right before the tugging begins ever time. Ok, now that you have been doing it in the kitchen for a while, tie the rope around the fridge handle and play the game that way with you swinging the door back and forth which tugs on the rope.

Continue this play for a few weeks. Gradually you will show your dog that you are placing the treat on a shelf in the fridge and you will encourage him to pick it up off the shelf there. Continue this for several days until the dog gets very good at this part.

Next, you will begin setting the treat on top of a beer can and allow him to begin associated the beer can with the treat. And now let me back up a bit. After the dog was doing well with getting the treat out of the fridge, begin also calling him to you and giving him another for coming to you.

Next, you will begin fastening or taping the treat to the can in some way so the dog feels he has to grab the can to get the treat. And this next point is very important. Once he has the beer can in his mouth, call him to you as usual. He should carry the can to you. It may take several days before this begins to work well.

But once he is bringing you the beer over and over, you have the battle won! He will now go and tug on the door upon command, grab the beer and bring it to you and then you give him the treat.

And that is how you train your canine to bring you a beer. Have fun!
