Different types of fish has different needs and have ideal environments that they can thrive in. However, if one is dealing with discus breeding plans they have to be more structured and organized. The breeding stage of discus is crucial and they would need more care and attention in order to be able to mate and produce quality eggs.

Water Quality in Relation to the Discus Breeding Stage

In discus breeding water quality is very important. If the water quality is not right, the food and the attention given to the discus fish would be of no use. The water temperature and quality has to be right in order to protect the eggs.

Discus Breeding: Water Formula

The water formula should contain soft water and distilled water with enough pH acid. Distilled water is good due to the fact that it does not contain minerals that cause the water to be too hard. Spring water and other bottled water can work as well. It would be good to have a water filtrating system, but be sure to test the quality before allowing the discus fish to stay in it.

The discus fish would need warm water with the right pH level. The water must not be too acidic or must not contain chlorine, carbon or any chemicals that may hinder the quality of life of the fish. The aquarium has to be large enough. If the aquarium is too small for discus breeding, the discus fish will not be able to mate. The tank has to be large enough for them to be able to clear out a space where they can place and tend to their eggs.

The food of the discus fish must also be high quality. It must contain nutrients that the fish needs in order to thrive.

Discus Breeding: What is the right way to pair discus fish?

The right way to pair the discus is to have a dozen young adults that have a body size like the size of a silver dollars and a 75 gallon tank. The discus fish must be fed 3x a day using spinach, fish foods, frozen blood worms, tetramin flakes, live brine shrimp and other recommended food. This should be done rigorously and with patience for 18 months. The tank has to be clean and the water fresh.

Signs to Look Out During the Discus Breeding Stage

The breeding time will happen when they reach year 2 and they would be the one to select their mate. Wait for them to do this then take and see how they will pair off.

Once you see a pair being territorial they are already preparing to mate. It would be best if there is no gravel bottom in the tank to make maintenance and water changes easy.

Place the pair in a smaller tank that has 10 gallons and then acclimatize them to the breeding tank water by removing a quart out of it for a period of an hour and by replacing it with breeding tank water.

By knowing the basics in discus breeding, your fish pets will have longer lives and will produce more offspring.
