What To Expect When Getting A Puppy

2016/5/4 10:15:21

Having a pet can be a wonderful thing especially if it is a dog, man's best friend so they say. Having a dog though is a lifetime commitment, they may look all cuddly and sweet when they are a puppy, and they soon grow and have bad habits, just as bad as an infant.

In some cases sadly, the owners just cannot cope with a new dog, due to its behaviour, or their working hours are getting in the way, and sometimes the cost. Not many people consider the cost involved in having such a pet, the first lot of jabs needed the monthly worming and flea treatment, insurances, and food. But for those who are committed and understand that they're going to be issues to overcome it can be a delight.

When a new puppy is taken from its mother, which should be after 8 weeks and not before, and placed in a new home they are going to be very confused. Not only have they been taken away from their mother and siblings, but there are new sounds and smells to contend with too. Allowing the puppy to explore the home first is essential, just be prepared for little puddles and maybe a poo or two. They won't have much energy to explore for long, so making sure that a special area with a bed is already been made up for them, so they can rest.

The first few nights may be a bit of a struggle, as they do tend to cry quite a lot, they have never been left alone before. Many people use dog crates in the first few months for the puppy to sleep in, and it may be advisable to place this in a bedroom, where the puppy can still see that someone is there. Over time the crate can be moved further and further away until it is in the desired location that you wish the puppy to remain, for instance the conservatory or the kitchen utility room.

It is important to start teaching the puppy where to go to the toilet. If the breeder where you purchased the puppy from was great, they would have already started this process of taking them outside. Make sure you take them out regularly and praise when they do their business. It may be best to not wash away what they have done straight away, as it will leave a scent for them, so they know where to go next time. It may be best to get a dog door installed. Teach the puppy how to go in and out of it, with treats and lots of praise.

Having a dog door installed is ideal for when you need to leave the dog to go to work, or if you are going shopping. They can let themselves out to the yard, play and do their business, without doing it all over your floor. There are many varieties of dog doors available to suit any type of door or dog you may have.

By training your puppy you can ensure that they will grow to be a great dog and a lifelong friend.
