Many Forms Of Animal Abuse And Cruelty

2016/5/4 10:12:51

Domesticated animals are at our mercy and rely on us for many things, including food and water, shelter and basic veterinary care to ensure they are properly vaccinated against disease and treated for any infections or illnesses. While most of us have pets in our home and treat them like members of the family, there are people who keep animals and abuse them every day. You may be unaware of the various forms of animal abuse and cruelty, but if you know of anyone who is treating an animal badly, you have a duty to report it to your local authorities. You must be the voice for those animals who cannot speak for themselves.

There are many forms of animal abuse and cruelty and some of them may not even seem like abuse to someone who does not see the animal on a daily basis. For example, a dog that is chained up in a yard all day long without food and water or shelter is being abused. A person who sees the dog in the yard may not see outright abuse at first glance, but actually, the animal is being neglected.

Upon closer examination, it is sometimes discovered that dogs that are chained up all of the time may even have a collar that is embedded in their skin. This occurs when a dog is fitted with a collar as a puppy, and that collar was never adjusted, not taking into account that the dog has grown. If a collar is embedded into the skin, it must be surgically removed by a veterinarian.

Dogs that do not receive regular veterinarian care or any proper care at all can suffer from eye infections, ear infections, flea and tick infestations. When they are not groomed regularly, their fur can become matted and can fall out in patches.

Factory farming is where thousands of animals are crammed into small spaces. One example would be laying hens in small cages that are never allowed to see the outside world or to leave their cages. Meat birds, such as turkeys and chickens are kept indoors and can trample each other and peck one another to death.

Horses require special care, and when people own them but do not provide regular hoof care, problems can occur. Hooves grow constantly, much like people's fingernails, and they must be trimmed and shaped at least once every three months by a farrier. If hooves are not properly cared for, the hooves will grow and curve upwards, making it impossible for the horse to walk. Eventually, the horse will become lame and will need to be euthanized.

Fur farms are common overseas in third world countries. This is perhaps the most cruel treatment of animals imaginable. Small dogs and cats are kept in cages and are beaten unconscious with a club. While they are unconscious, they are skinned alive and then thrown into a large heap like garbage. When the animal regains consciousness, it suffers from intense pain and dies a slow death. The furs are used to create small novelty items for children.

Greyhounds are bred for racing, are exterminated once they stop winning races. In some cases, these animals are sent for experimentation. Animals used for experimentation, such as rabbits, are blinded using something called "Draize testing" where compounds are put directly into their eyes. The best way to discourage this kind of cruelty is to purchase products that are "not tested on animals".

In some cases, owners are simply ignorant of the level of care and attention that their animals require. Animal authorities often provide those owners with education and offer them a specific amount of time to correct the problem. Given the period of time and if still changes have not been made, animals can be legally seized from those owners. The owners themselves can even be penalized.
