How To Train A Dog To Stay - The Correct Way To Train Your Dog

How to train a dog to stay is something that a lot of dog owners are struggling to learn how to teach their beloved pet. This is a command that all dogs need to learn so they can become well behaved and it can even save their life at times, like if you live on a busy street where your dog can get hit by a car.

You have to take time right away to begin teaching your dog this trick because the sooner you teach them the safer and more well behaved they will be. Many people believe that it is very difficult to train a dog to stay on command, but it is not as hard as it seems to be.

The training just has to be done consistently every day until they can do what you ask them to each time you give the command. The training is going to require time and patience from you since a dog learns by you showing them over and over what behavior you want them to do.

Now, to start your training with your dog you want to make sure you do this in an area where there are no distractions and no other people around. That way you can keep their attention on you where you need it for your short training period.

Make sure you put yourself eye level with them after you have given them the command to sit, which is a command that they need to be taught before you teach them to stay. Once they are sitting, use treats along with praise to reward their behavior with.

It is important to be sure you use the same command and training techniques each time you spend with your dog on this command so they can learn easier. Otherwise, changing the commands and techniques can confuse them and they will definitely not learn what you want them to.

Now, once you are at eye level with them, hold a treat enclosed in your fist that is held close to your chest. Then use the other hand to give them the signal to stay, which is usually a hand held up with your palm facing the dog and give them the command to stay also.

Do this for a short time period and if they follow your command, then give them praise and a treat to let them know that they did what you wanted. Do this process over and over until, with longer periods in between each treat.

You can also move a little way away from the dog each time so they understand that no matter where you go, they need to stay until you tell them otherwise. This training will take time, but with patience and persistence you can easily make your dog obey this command.

Now that you are aware of how to train a dog to stay, you need to begin training your dog right away. The sooner they have been taught this command the sooner they will be safer and more behaved. Plus, you can begin teaching them other commands and know that they can be taught to do it easily.
