Are You Ready To Raise Labradoodle Puppies?

So you've made the wonderful decision to add a new addition to your family. However, are you ready to raise Labradoodle puppies? Preparation and education is one of the key aspects of owning a pet and there are a few important factors to consider when getting ready to welcome any dog into your home.

There are a few key things you need to know and remember:

- Vaccinations. Young puppies have susceptible immune systems. They therefore need to receive a three-course vaccination during their first 18 weeks of life and then once a year after that. Find a good local vet for your new puppy and ask them to set you up on their vaccination program, that way they'll send you reminders when vaccinations are due.

- Worming. Regular worming is essential for good health. We'll give you advice on this when you pick up your puppy but you can also get advice from your local vet. Again, schedule reminders into your diary or phone calendar so that you don't forget this important task.

- Grooming. You can find dogs that have been bred specifically to need very little grooming. A good comb through the coat from the base of the coat and out is required every 7-10 days and trim of the coat as required to keep it looking healthy and make sure your puppy is comfortable. A professional groomer will also check your puppy's eyes, ears and nails; it is advisable to do this regularly to keep them clean and to remove any irritants.

- Diet. Like any animal, Labradoodle puppies require a well-balanced diet. Good-quality dry food can be interspersed with something like raw chicken necks or wings to keep your dog's teeth and gums healthy. Note that cooked bones should be avoided as they can splinter. Chocolate and nuts are also off the list as they are poisonous to dogs and can be fatal.

- Environment. Making sure you have prepared your home to accommodate your new family member is just as important. Have you secured a safe area for them to roam and play? Is your yard secure? Carefully check the perimeter and ensure even the smallest gaps in fences are closed off. Designate an area for your dog to sleep and always have clean and warm bedding for them. Also identify which areas inside your home they are allowed to enter and enforce this as part of their training from the beginning.
