Wild Bird Food Bring Beauty To Your Garden

People who have a garden understand the beauty and importance of having birds visiting. If you are looking to increase the amount visiting your garden, it is important that you choose the right wild bird food. The quality and even location of placement in your garden also play a key part in bringing in the right feathered friends.

Placing just any old feed outdoors will often times draw in the wrong sort of crowd. You will get many that come in and take over the feeding spot. They can often be more of a nuisance, driving away the beautiful, smaller song birds that you want occupying your garden. Depending on the region you live, the wrong food may bring in crows, blackbirds, grackles and blue jays. All of these are predator type birds who act as bullies, eating all the feed and scaring off the rest.

To keep the animals coming back to your garden year after year, it is important to feed them the type of feed they generally find in nature. Purchasing from regional stores can help accomplish this. Complimenting their natural diet will ensure you are inviting the right animals into your yard. If you didn't realize it, bird food does have an expiration date.

It is important to know the freshness of the feed. As it ages, it begins losing nutrients. If you are buying larger, bulk sized bags, you may even have mildewing or spoiling in the center portion of the bag.

Another important thing to note is how much of the seed you are giving is actually just filler. Many less expensive feeds use a lot of filler, which the birds don't generally eat and are basically a waste of money and can make a mess in your yard. Filler seeds include milo, sorghum, red millet and golden millet. Birds will push through these fillers to get the food they want, so it is more financially sound to choose one that is higher quality.

Seeds like safflower, sunflower and even peanut kernels and nyjer seeds are all choices to look for when selecting a feed. However, not all birds eat seeds. Many are attracted to the beautiful flowers and trees in your garden and often times providing a fruit tree will draw in gorgeous feathered friends into your sanctuary. Even berry bushes of all types draw a crowd and you can even share in the bounty.

If you are looking to draw in animals like woodpeckers, who are insect eaters, you can purchase special suet blocks that contain dried bugs inside. Hanging these from your trees will keep them from going after the wood itself and you will be supplying them with a bounty of delicious insects. Make sure to check periodically on the blocks to ensure freshness and keep from the birds ingesting spoiled or rancid food, especially in the warmer months.

Wild bird food will help draw beautiful wildlife into your yard. You will be able to enjoy their beauty and song throughout the year while keeping them happy and healthy with the provided feed. Feeders can be beautiful and come in every shape and size and make a wonderful ornamental addition to your beautiful yard.
