The Basset Hound (also known as the "low-set hound") is a hound breed of dog. They feature floppy ears and a brown or red and white coat. The breed first appeared in the 1500s. They were originally bred for hunting small game. These days they are popular as a companion dog. They can be recognized by their dopey appearance and affectionate temperament. They are thought to originate from France and are a descendant of the Bloodhound and other unknown breeds.

They are classified as a medium sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 14 inches high with a weight of 40-60 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be sweet, gentle and good-natured. They are typically peaceful with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be not very intelligent, and ranks 71st compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are easygoing with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and cats. Grooming them is a relatively easy task. They need occasional brushing every week, and full grooming every 8-10 weeks. They enjoy having a good yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Unlike most medium sized breeds, they are primarily shorter-lived with a life expectancy of 10 years. Their most severe health concern is obesity, and they are also susceptible to patellar luxation, invertebral disc disease, glaucoma, epilepsy, skin conditions and ear infections. They enjoy hobbies like long play sessions or runs around the yard. They have a low level of energy, which means they need moderate to long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Basset Hound you need to be prepared to meet their needs for attention. They are less suitable for households with prey animals like rabbits, but highly suitable for singles or families with time to care for a dog. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a gentle and affectionate nature that means it will make a very loving companion dog. Another good thing about them is they have a high level of stamina and will be happy to play games with you for hours.
