The Border Terrier (also known as the "Border") is a terrier breed of dog. They feature an otter-like face and wiry coat. The breed first appeared in the 1700s. They were originally bred for hunting foxes. These days they are popular as a companion dog. They can be recognized by their distinctive face and well-mannered temperament. They are thought to originate from the UK on the border of Scotland and England and are a descendant of common ancestors of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier and Bedlington Terrier.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male size is 12-15.5 inches high with a weight of 12-20 pounds, while the female size is 11.5-14 inches high with a weight of 12-16 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be good-tempered, curious and independent. They are typically friendly with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be quite intelligent, and ranks 30th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and cats they're raised with. Grooming them is a simple task. They need light brushing every week, and full grooming every 4 to 6 weeks. They enjoy having a small, well-fenced yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most severe health concern is "Spike's Disease". They enjoy hobbies like playing with toys or chasing balls. They have a high level of energy, which means they need long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Border Terrier you need to be prepared to give them plenty of attention, exercise and stimulation. They are less suitable for households with prey animals, but highly suitable for active owners or families with time for a dog. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a well-mannered nature and is great with kids which can make it a great family pet. Another good thing about them is they have very few health problems to be concerned about.
