Basic Things You Should Know About The French Bulldog

The French Bulldog (also known as the "Frenchie") is a non-sporting breed of dog. They feature a brindle, fawn or white coat and bat-like ears. The breed first appeared in the 1800s. They were originally bred for bull baiting. These days they are popular as a companion dog. They can be recognized by their sweet temperament and distinctive ears. They are thought to originate from England and are a descendant of the original Bulldog, Pug and various terriers.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 11-14 inches high with a weight of 20-28 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be sweet, adaptable and well-mannered. They are typically friendly with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be fairly intelligent, and ranks 58th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are great (but maybe a bit enthusiastic for some) with children, which can make them suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs that are just as playful as them. Grooming them is a pretty easy task. They need occasional brushing every week, and full grooming every 8 to 12 weeks. They enjoy having a small (though is happiest inside with their family) yard to run around in, but can very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Unlike most small sized breeds, they are primarily shorter-lived with a life expectancy of 9-11 years. Their most severe health concern is heart problems, eye problems or breathing difficulties, and they are also susceptible to obesity, joint diseases, spinal disorders, dry skin and sensitivity to heat. They enjoy hobbies like indoor play sessions or a run around the yard. They have a moderate level of energy, which means they need average-length walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the French Bulldog you need to be prepared to give them plenty of attention and meet their demand for health care. They are less suitable for people with an active lifestyle, but highly suitable for families or retirees with time to care for a dog. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a characteristically sweet nature that makes it a loving companion dog.
