Basic Things You Should Know About The Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin (also known as the Japanese Toy Spaniel) is a toy breed of dog. They feature a black or tan or red and white coat. The breed first appeared in China. They were originally bred for companionship (contrary to the belief that dogs were working animals). These days they are popular as a companion dog for gentle owners. They can be recognized by their cheerful temperament and attachment to their owners. They are thought to originate from China and are a descendant of ancestors of the Pekingese and Tibetan Spaniel.

They are classified as a tiny sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 8-11 inches high with a weight of 4-7 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be sensitive, devoted and eager-to-please. They are typically reserved with strangers, and this plus their small size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be quite intelligent, and ranks 62nd compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them fairly suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as dogs and other pets. Grooming them is a simple task. They need a small amount of brushing every few days, and full grooming every every so often. They enjoy having a small yard to run around in, but can very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most tiny sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health concern is breathing problems or sensitivity to heat, and they are also susceptible to eye problems, seasonal allergies and distemper. They enjoy hobbies like running around the yard or playing inside. They have a moderate level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Japanese Chin you need to be prepared to give them a high amount of companionship. They are less suitable for families with young children, but highly suitable for retirees, apartment dwellers or families with older children. One of the best things about this breed is that it makes a wonderful companion due to its cheerful nature and close attachment to their owner.
