Basic Things You Should Know About The Lhasa Apso

The Lhasa Apso (also known as the Lhasa Terrier) is a non-sporting breed of dog. They feature a long shaggy coat that makes them look like a small English Sheepdog. The breed first appeared in around 800BC. They were originally bred for acting as a watch dog inside Buddhist monasteries. These days they are popular as a companion for patient owners. They can be recognized by their shaggy coat and stubborn but devoted temperament. They are thought to originate from the Himalayan Mountains near the city of Lhasa and are a descendant of close to the ancestral wolves.

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male size is 10-11 inches high with a weight of 11-18 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be bold, alert and sometimes stubborn. They are typically reserved (with a tendency to bark) with strangers, but their small size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be not highly intelligent, and ranks 68th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them somewhat suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other pets and dogs they can play with. Grooming them is a demanding task. They need regular brushing every day or two, and full grooming every 2 to 3 weeks. They enjoy having a small (though doesn't need one) yard to run around in, but can very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health concern is skin conditions or infections, and they are also susceptible to kidney problems, hip dysplasia or eye problems. They enjoy hobbies like indoor play sessions or games of fetch. They have a low to medium level of energy, which means they need moderate walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Lhasa Apso you need to be prepared to spend a lot of time grooming and giving them attention. They are less suitable for families with young, rough children, but highly suitable for families with older children or anyone with a less active lifestyle. One of the best things about this breed is that it has a lovable shaggy appearance and devoted temperament that means it will be a great companion for many years.
