The Pomeranian (also known as the "Pom") is a toy breed of dog. They feature a foxlike appearance and a fluffy coat that comes in several colours. The breed first appeared in the mid 1700s. They were originally bred for herding sheep. These days they are popular as a companion or show dog. They can be recognized by their powder puff appearance and energetic temperament. They are thought to originate from the region between Germany and Poland once called Pomerania and are a descendant of the German Spitz and other Arctic working dogs.

They are classified as a tiny sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 8-11 inches high with a weight of 3-7 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be busy, attentive and curious. They are typically reserved with strangers, but their small size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be quite intelligent, and ranks 23rd compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are not the best with children, which can make them not always suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as pets they live with from an early age. Grooming them is a straightforward task. They need small brushing every week, and full grooming every 6 to 8 weeks. They enjoy having a small (though one is not always necessary) yard to run around in, but very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most tiny sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most severe health concern is teeth problems, and they are also susceptible to eye and skin infections, cataracts, dry eyes or heart defects. They enjoy hobbies like play sessions or a run around the house. They have a high level of energy, which means they need fairly long walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Pomeranian you need to be prepared to give them early training to prevent small dog syndrome. They are less suitable for families with young children, but highly suitable for families with older children, retirees or apartment dwellers. One of the best things about this breed is that it has an adorable appearance and energy that is easy to fall in love with. Another good thing about them is despite their fluffy coat they are really quite easy to groom.
