Basic Things You Should Know About The Poodle

The Poodle (also known as the "French Poodle") is a non-sporting breed of dog. They feature a wiry coat that is often seen in various different haircuts. The breed first appeared in the 15th century. They were originally bred for retrieving game from the water. These days they are popular as a circus dog, a show dog, for hunting or companionship. They can be recognized by their often crazy hairstyles and their high intelligence. They are thought to originate from Germany and are a descendant of the Barbet and Hungarian Water Hound.

They are classified as a large sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 22-27 inches high with a weight of 40-80 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be playful, obedient and devoted. They are typically outgoing (if socialized) with strangers, and this makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be extremely intelligent, and ranks 2nd compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are good with children, which can make them highly suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as other dogs and cats. Grooming them is a very demanding task. They need high (about 10 hours) brushing every week, and full grooming every 5 weeks. They enjoy having a small yard to run around in, but can be suitable for apartment life.

Like most large sized breeds, they are primarily shorter-lived with a life expectancy of 10-13 years. Their most severe health concern is eye problems, and they are also susceptible to Addison's disease, Von Willebrand's disease, bloat and hip dysplasia. They enjoy hobbies like games of fetch, swimming or learning tricks. They have a high level of energy, which means they need moderate walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Poodle you need to be prepared to meet their high demands for grooming and mental stimulation. They are less suitable for people who don't have much time for grooming or training, but highly suitable for active owners or families with plenty of time for a dog. One of the best things about this breed is that it is a highly intelligent and obedient breed you can teach anything to. Another good thing about them is it is hypoallergenic because of its curly coat and suited to allergy sufferers.
