The Pug (also known as the "Dutch Mastiff" or "Dutch Bulldog") is a toy breed of dog. They feature a flat face, big eyes and a fawn and black or pure black coat. The breed first appeared in around 400BC. They were originally bred for providing companionship for the Chinese royal family. These days they are popular as a companion dog for families or apartment dwellers. They can be recognized by their adorable appearance, charm and playfulness. They are thought to originate from China around 400BC and are a descendant of similar to ancestors of the Pekingese and Lhasa Apso (all records were destroyed).

They are classified as a small sized dog. The recommended male and female size is 10-11 inches high with a weight of 14-18 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be pleasant and charming. They are typically friendly with strangers, and this along with their size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be fairly intelligent, and ranks 57th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are great with children, which can make them very suitable as a family pet. They do get along well with other animals such as cats, rabbits and other dogs. Grooming them is a simple task. They need minimal brushing every week or so, and full grooming every couple of months. They enjoy having a small (though doesn't really need any) yard to run around in, but very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most small sized breeds, they are primarily longer-lived with a life expectancy of 12-14 years. Their most severe health concern is obesity due to their love of food, and they are also susceptible to skin problems, allergies, breathing issues or epilepsy. They enjoy hobbies like indoor games and play sessions. They have a low to medium level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Pug you need to be prepared to give them a high amount of attention and basic training. They are less suitable for people living in extreme climates, but highly suitable for families, retirees, apartment dwellers or other fun loving owners. One of the best things about this breed is that it has an adorable appearance and charming nature that makes them easy to fall in love with.
