Basic Things You Should Know About The Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier (also known as the "Yorkie") is a toy breed of dog. They feature a silky blue and tan coat, a small face and perky ears. The breed first appeared in the mid-1800s. They were originally bred for catching rats. These days they are popular as a companion or show dog. They can be recognized by their pampered appearance and feisty temperament. They are thought to originate from Yorkshire and are a descendant of the Maltese and a large number of terrier breeds.

They are classified as a tiny sized dog. The recommended size is 6-9 inches high with a weight of 5-7 pounds. Their temperament is well-known to be busy, curious and often stubborn. They are typically suspicious with strangers, but their small size makes them unsuitable as a guard dog. The breed is known to be highly intelligent, and ranks 27th compared to all other breeds when learning new obedience instructions.

They are sometimes snappy with children, which can make them not very suitable as a family pet. They don't get along well with other animals such as other dogs and pets (any introductions should be slow). Grooming them is a time consuming task. They need regular brushing every day or two, and full grooming every 3-4 weeks. They enjoy having a small (though are quite happy without one) yard to run around in, but can very easily be suitable for apartment life.

Like most tiny sized breeds, they are primarily long-lived with a life expectancy of 12-15 years. Their most severe health concern is injuries and broken bones, and they are also susceptible to bronchitis, patellar luxation, hypoglycemia, cataracts, PRA or tooth decay. They enjoy hobbies like play sessions with their owner. They have a high level of energy, which means they need short walks each day to prevent destructive behavior.

If you own the Yorkshire Terrier you need to be prepared to provide them with early training and lots of attention. They are less suitable for households with other pets and young children, but highly suitable for gentle owners or families with older children. Here are a few things you'll love about the Yorkshire Terrier:

1. One of the best things about this breed is that it is small and able to live almost anywhere without a yard.

2. Another good thing about them is they have an appearance that's simply adorable.

3. Another good thing about them is their bold and feisty character will make it very easy to fall in love with them.
