A Dog's Last Will and Testament

2016/5/4 10:07:29

If you have ever owned a pet, you know the special place they hold in your heart. I pray that our "Biscuit" knows the special place he holds in our hearts and that he will be with us for a long time to come! WARNING…I would have a box of tissues handy!

Before humans die, they write their last Will & Testament, and give their home and all they have to those they leave behind. If, with my paws, I could do the same, this is what I'd ask… To a poor and lonely stray I'd give: My happy home, My bowl, My cozy bed, My soft pillows and all my toys, The lap which I loved so much, The hand that stroked my fur and the sweet voice which spoke my name, I'd will to the sad scared shelter dog the place I had in my human's heart, of which there seemed no bounds. So when I die please do not say, "I will never have a pet again, for the loss and pain is more than I can stand." Instead go find an unloved dog; one whose life has held no joy or hope and give MY place to him. This is the only thing I can give…the love I left behind. ~ Author Unknown

Any pet owner would probably say that their dog or cat is just like any other family member. We hug them, kiss them, play with them and some even make play dates for them! Admittedly, I have conversations with my dog and sometimes even expect that he respond! Why then wouldn't you take the same care and effort in making certain that there is a plan in place for your pet either if you become ill or after your death?

There are methods of estate planning that allow for a pet owner to give the pet to someone through their Will or Trust. An owner can even create a Trust for that pet so that the new owner will have the monetary resources to care for that pet. I suggest even writing a detailed list of where the pet sleeps, what it eats, temperment, the name and phone number of the veterinarian and what medications the pet takes; even what his favorite toy is. Are you seeing a similarity between how you would protect your children and how you would protect your pets...seems pretty similar to me!
