Should I Crate Train My New Puppy?

2016/5/4 10:07:26

Did you just purchase a new puppy and now your thinking about crate training him or her? One of the best things about dog crates is that they provide dogs with a place to call their own. Once you have trained your dog to spend time in a crate they will feel safe and comfortable when inside. It appeals to their instinct to create a den. For an excitable dog there are few things that you can do that is as kind as crate training them. While crates should not be used to restrain a dog for long periods, crates can be very useful in many other regards.

When you begin house training a dog a crate will keep them from soiling indoors. Dogs instinctively avoid soiling or wetting in their den. If you take your dog for a walk after they eat, they will commonly eliminate. Then you can put them in the kennel for a while and follow that kennel time up with more outdoor time.

It is critical that you don't make the kennel a place for discipline. Make the dog crate warm and welcoming. No matter when you introduce a dog to a crate, make it a positive experience. Place a comfortable pad or blanket on the bottom of the crate. Let the dog sniff around the crate with the door open for a while. Then, saying "crate" or "kennel" toss a favorite treat into the crate and let your dog go get it. If they associate the kennel with something nice, then they are more willing to spend time inside.

Another nice thing you can do with a kennel is use it to rotate through some special toys. A sterilized beef bone filled with peanut butter can keep a dog happy for quite a while. Chew toys for puppies placed in a crate will significantly reduce the likelihood of an inappropriate chewing incident. Anything you can do to make the crate a good experience will pay off in the end.

If you have a houseful of dogs, people and activity, you are going to want to make sure you have a crate for each animal. Everyone wants a quiet place to call their own; dogs want that too. When things get too overwhelming for your pooch, they will wander over to their personal crate and take some time away from the hullabaloo emerging later refreshed and confident.

Crates come in a variety of styles. The most common styles are molded plastic crates and wire crates. These crates are perfectly acceptable, although most dogs prefer the enclosed feeling of the plastic versions better. You can also get a variety of fancy wooden dog crates that match your décor.

Believe me; your dog won't care as long as they feel safe and cozy. A crate need only be big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around. Or if you are looking to contain your dog outside you can use a dog kennel. There should be room for a bowl of water if the dog needs to be crated for more than an hour or so. That's all it takes.

You can begin teaching your dog how to enjoy a crate at any age, so why not start today?
