The Importance Of Training Your Puppy

2016/5/4 10:07:08

Owning a new puppy can be a blessing for the whole family but proper training is required to have a well trained dog. They are fun and full of energy but come with many responsibilities that need to be addressed. Without proper training, they will not learn the proper place to do their business, chew up your valuables, greet and interact with other dogs and visitors to your home, commands to follow or food to eat.

Before even bringing home a new puppy, you will want to make sure you get them the correct supplies. Purchasing a crate will help when training him as you will be able to make it their little home or safe haven. There are many crate and designs to choose from but the most important thing is getting one large enough for them. (One thing to note is small dogs with very larger crates will pee on one end and sleep on the other) As they grow, you don't want a larger dog feeling trapped in a crate too small for them. Toys are also a great gift for them, especially ones that squeak and teething toys to promote good dental hygiene. Rewards and treats can be beneficial when training and your puppy does something right and are great incentives. Getting the proper food is essential for their health as this is a vital time for them to receive nutrients and vitamins. Your vet can recommend which brand is best for your puppy's breed or your local pet store.

When they come home for the first time, you will want to just put them down and let them roam free. This is a big mistake because the first thing they may do will be to poop or urinate various areas in either territorial marking or because they are scared. Place them in the crate with their toys and give them a treat. It may be difficult for you to hear them crying or fussing but you must be resistant. Letting them out for short intervals like a few hours will be their reward and you will want to set up your puppy pads showing him/her where to go. Show them the area and if they go there, reward them with a treat and praise.

As they continue to follow this routine and go in the same place, you can reward them with longer times to stay out and play. When putting them in the crate, try not to leave them alone where they won't see you as they will begin to cry and yelp (some may start barking if their vocals are developed). One of the primary things to remember is even if you get mad at them for making mistakes, you need to control your anger and never hit or abuse them. Make note of the time that they pee and poop as they will begin to fall into a schedule and routine allowing it to be easier on you. Continue the process until it becomes second nature for them and you will enjoy having them out of the crate for extended periods.
