It is true that dogs are not for everyone, but for the millions who own a dog or are animal lovers in general; dogs are beneficial to humans in many ways. A great example is the more than one-third of Americans who are obese. It is often difficult to get and stay energized to exercise, but let's face it, the weight is not going to fall off by itself. Modifying your diet is a huge factor, but exercise has to be a component of losing weight.

Walking a dog is one way to get motivated to exercise. It is much more difficult to talk yourself out of exercising when you have two big eyes and an eagerly wagging tail right in front of you begging to go outside. Recent studies have shown that dog owners are not only more likely to take more walks, but they are more active, in general, than people who do not own a dog. Your dog wants and needs to walk and so do you. Many of us are more likely to do something that benefits our dogs before we do something good for ourselves. With walking, both pet and owner get something out of the deal. Studies have also shown that pet ownership is good for keeping your blood pressure and stress level lower than people who do not have pets. The unconditional love that a dog offers gives you a sense of purpose. Their needs are so simple yet they bring such joy into your life.

Larger dogs need more walking than smaller dogs, but both benefit from the outdoor experience. Leash walking is certainly the most common type of outing, but other methods of getting out with your pet are on the rise. Many people enjoy bike riding and bike leashes make it easy to take your larger dog along. There is even a way to attach two dog leashes to your bike so everyone can get a workout. For the small dogs you want to take along with you, pet bike baskets and pet bike trailers are easy to attach and great fun for your dog. Pet bike trailers have a sun roof so your dog can enjoy the wind blowing in his face.

Another transportation option is the pet stroller. Dogs that cannot walk as far as planned will benefit from a stroller ride. Dogs that are older, are injured, or who are recovering from surgery still want to enjoy the outdoors. There are jogger pet strollers that maneuver easily and provide a smooth ride for your dog. You also can get a stroller with a lower-to-the ground entry, making it easier for the frailer dog to get inside.Good weather makes it more fun to get outside. Pet strollers, pet bike trailers, bike baskets and bike leashes make it possible to take your dog with you on any outdoor excursion.
